So it doesn't real ly do what I expected of it. If you want a budget Wi-Fi extender that gets the job done, the D-Link Eagle Pro AI E15 is a great choice. I understand it is possible to give the wireless network created by the WN3000 the same name as the main router, but clients (the devices that connect to it) can get confused. Depending on the device, that may be automatic but will mean an interruption in network connection. To make use of it whilst roaming the house / building, it would be neccesary to leave the weak network and join a different network by going in to wireless network settings on your device.
By default, it creates a new wireless network with a different name to the main router.
My only problem is that the title 'range extender' is a bit misleading. Once connected, signal is strong and reliable. Setup was not too difficult with the benefit of some IT networking knowledge, might have struggled otherwise.
